Design your own chess piece

Pick a piece, pick a part of it, pick a colour. Then put it on a board and see how it looks. Every piece comes with one true thing about where it came from.

One thing about the knight. The knight is the only piece that jumps over others. Put one in the corner and it has just two squares to choose from, which is why knights belong in the middle.

1. Which piece?
2. Which part are you colouring?
3. Pick a colour

Nothing here is saved or sent. Close the page and the piece is gone, which is exactly how a children's activity on a business website should work.

Why a colouring activity is on a chess website

The first thing a five year old wants to do with a chess set is pick the pieces up and look at them. Naming them and noticing that they are all different is genuinely the first lesson, and it is the one that decides whether a child comes back next week. This is that lesson, with the board taken away so nothing can go wrong.

The facts beside each piece are the sort of thing that gets repeated at home. A child who tells somebody that the rook is named after a chariot has remembered something about chess that has nothing to do with winning.
